40. 原文：欲路上事，毋乐其便而姑为染指，一染指便深入万仞；理路上事，毋惮其难而稍为退步，一退步便远隔千山。
今译：欲念方面的事，不要因为贪图眼前的方便而随意沾染，一旦放纵自己就会堕入万丈深渊；义理方面的事，不要因为害怕困难而因此退缩不前，一旦退缩就会与真理远隔万水千山。
英译：In the matter of desires, do not dip your fingers in the material gains within your reach, for if you do, you will be caught in an abyss; With regard to the truth, do not shrink from the difficulties on the way, for if you do, you will be thousands of mountains and rivers from the object.
